Wieliczka has been worked since the thirteenth century and the visitor route runs through nine levels of carved chambers, brine lakes and a cathedral cut out of rock salt. It is about 800 steps down, 14°C all year, and three hours underground.
Entry, and you find your own way there
You get the timed entry and the guided route underground. Getting to Wieliczka is on you: the 304 bus from Krakow’s Galeria Krakowska, or the train to Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia.

Two hours south of Krakow the country turns vertical.
Zakopane is Poland’s winter capital and its summer trailhead: the Gubáłówka funicular, the Kasprowy cable car, thermal pools fed from two kilometres down, and the long walk in to Morskie Oko. Almost all of it is sold as a day trip from Krakow, which is the one decision worth getting right.
Poland is cheap until the transfer is included.

Gdansk rebuilt its skyline gable by gable.
The Motława waterfront is a reconstruction, and knowing that makes it better rather than worse. Take the river on a wooden boat, walk Długi Targ before the cruise ships unload, and give half a day to Malbork — the largest brick castle in the world sits an hour up the line.

The Salt Cathedral
St Kinga’s Chapel sits 101 metres underground and everything in it was carved from rock salt — the altar, the floor that looks tiled, the chandeliers. Three miners did it in their own time across most of a century. Weddings are still held down there.

Nowa Huta by Trabant
In the 1950s Krakow was given a steelworks and an entire socialist-realist town beside it, planted next to a thousand-year-old capital to dilute it. Guides run the district in period Trabants and Nysa vans, and lunch in a milk bar is part of the afternoon.

The Dunajec Rafts
